20 Tips on Practicing Self-Care in University

Listen to me, self-care is important. When done properly, it helps you improve your confidence and well-being. Self-care is not an excuse to avoid doing work, but a tool that allows you to be effective with all that you have to do.

School is stressful. It isn’t always the most welcoming environment and the expectations you may have for yourself and the expectations others may have for you can be great. It is integral not to let the weight that we carry weigh us down.

There are so many ways you can practice self-care, during school and outside of school. Most importantly self-care looks like whatever you need it to be. Whatever allows you to take a second, breathe and feel rejuvenated works! Here are some examples:

  1. Make a date with yourself and do something that nourishes you, not something that you NEED to do

  2. Read a book

  3. Watch a movie

  4. Eat your comfort food

  5. Paint

  6. Completely unplug

  7. Write in a journal

  8. Take a quick nap

  9. Go on a walk

  10. Take a long bath or shower

  11. Declutter

  12. Stretch

  13. Spend time with someone that makes you happy

  14. Stay hydrated and re-fuel

  15. Exercise (at a gym or in your room, whatever works!)

  16. Practice mindfulness

  17. Talk about it, how you feel, what you’re thinking

  18. Make sure to eat regular meals

  19. Practice deep-breathing and meditation

  20. Set realistic and attainable goals

Be diligent and effective when choosing your methods of self-care. Make sure you aren’t just taking time off because you can take breaks without actually resting. Sometimes, these little breaks cause you to stress even more because you don’t feel productive.

Self-care only works when you prioritize yourself and work to relieve any tension you may be feeling! Once you do that, you may find that focusing on your assignments, studying for that exam or finishing your homework becomes just a bit easier. It’s hard to make sure you have taken care of yourself because oftentimes, we feel lazy or unproductive when we are doing it. Please remember that it is not selfish to allow yourself some time. It’s a huge part of the foundation you need to set to survive your time in school.
