At this point, I’m sure you have felt some sort of impact due to Covid-19. Whether that be online classes or no school at all, we’re all feeling the strain this virus has brought on our education.
And let’s be honest! The thought of taking a class in my pjs, not worrying about rushing out of my dorm is great. But being home, surrounded by distractions makes this whole transition a bit harder.
From packing up, moving back to starting classes completely online– it’s been a mess. Even if you didn’t have to move, I’m sure you’re feeling the stress too! Libraries are closed, restaurants have shut down their dining areas, and schools have ceased all activities. There aren’t many options for studying and getting work done.
So, how do we get through the rest of this semester with as little issue as possible?
A Designated Study Space.
Unfortunately, this cannot be your bed. Bed = sleep and sleep = no work done. Choose a spot that is quiet and allows you to focus. The least amount of disturbances, the better.
Make a Study Schedule.
It’s so easy to lose track of all that you need to do when you don’t have a set outline. Make sure you note down all of your due dates and test dates, then plan around that. Make a realistic to-do list and stick to it. Don’t forget about break times and wiggle room. Sometimes things take a bit longer than planned so don’t forget to take that into account!
Time Management = KEY.
For me, I have found that I am the most productive when I set timers. Studying in blocks allows you to completely focus on your work for a set period of time. Breaking up your work into tiny chunks makes everything feel a bit more manageable. Time management also means putting away your phone, getting off of social media and being aware of what you are spending your time on.
Participate.
Join in on the class discussion, online office hours and groups. Connect with other classmates about the assignments and the course content. Above all, if you have questions, please ask them! If your professor has online office hours, take advantage of that. If not, send them an email with your questions (check out Emailing Your Professors!).
Reward Yourself!
Reward systems send positive messages to the brain. Discipline is required when you’re studying online and completely responsible for all of your coursework and lessons. Rewards motivate you to stay on top of your work and keep going. When you achieve a study goal or just make it through the day, give yourself a treat!
Self Care!
As always, don’t forget to take care of yourself and don’t take on more than you can handle. It’s not easy to be doing this so make sure that you set healthy boundaries for yourself and respect them. Take study breaks, unplug and set aside time that is completely dedicated to you.
