Imposter Syndrome - the fear of not being smart enough, doubting your skills and ability, being scared of being seen as a fraud
For whatever reason, you may think that you have no right being at your current stage or level. You question how got there, why you thought you could do it in the first place, whatever it may be. I get it. I'm pretty sure we've all experienced our fair share of self-doubt.
But, there's a difference between having a few doubts and consistently questioning your abilities. You have gone through way too much and accomplished so many things. Chronic self-doubt can be harmful and can be caused by a pressure to achieve.
So how do we remedy this? How do we alleviate the fears and concerns we have?
It wasn't luck that got you here. It wasn't a series of fortunate events. You earned your right to have a seat at the table and we are not going to let doubt be the reason why you walk away.
Dealing with Imposter Syndrome
Acknowledge the problem and how it impacts you. It's important that you actually acknowledge what you are going through. Plus, when you acknowledge what's going on, you can talk about it! There are a lot of people who are in the same boat and would benefit from hearing what you have to say.
Acknowledge the roots of your self-doubt. Track when these thoughts & feelings occur. If you can pinpoint the thoughts or habits that lead you to feel this way, you can make the necessary changes.
Take pride in your accomplishments. Take the time to appreciate just how awesome you are! Re-affirm your self-worth and remind yourself exactly why you deserve to be where you are! Set aside time to reflect on those grades, scholarships, awards, accomplishments that make you proud. Keep these reminders handy when things get overwhelming.
Realize no one is perfect. Stop focusing on perfection. Nobody is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, even you. Learn to forgive yourself, be kind to yourself and reward yourself. Mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow.
Change your thinking. It's easier said than done, I know. Think about where you want to be and why you are where you are. It's also important to reframe how you look at things. If you can learn how to reframe your view on assignments, tests and grades, you take away their power. These are all things that can all contribute to the cycle of imposter syndrome. The pressure to succeed can be overwhelming, but you aren't alone and can always ask for help.
